This record begins with a saxophone and trumpet prologue - and ends with a loud, enormously powerful saxophone tone from Mack Goldsbury: the whole thing is a well-rounded affair. This is a "high level recording"
Linernotes
The best new music is often created
when, under fortunate circumstances, a timely union or reunion of masterful musicians takes place. The Ernst Bier/Mack Goldsbury Quintet is made up of instrumentalists whose musical paths have crossed repeatedly over the past twenty years.
They have traveled almost every musical avenue, road, path and back alley on the map of 20th century music and have been intimately involved with the music and musicians who made their mark in the last half of the 20th century. The music on this CD reflects the influences of bop, swing, blues, avant-garde and contemporary music while shedding light on untouched territory of the 21st century.
This CD was recorded in the summer of 1998, shortly after Herb joined the band and a week of playing at A-Trane, Berlin's top jazz club. The week was the necessary preparation for recording music that requires group understanding and commitment. The band's approach to the music is a collaborative one, with Goldsbury, Robertson and Schuller all contributing compositions.
